Free hazardous waste disposal programs, sponsored by Waste Management/Pheasant Run RFD since 1998, for Kenosha County, Wisconsin, residents have saved more than $600,000 as of 2010, according to the County of Kenosha website. Disposing of oil-based paint in an environmentally safe way is important for the future quality of the environment. Kenosha city residents have a free monthly opportunity to dispose of unused oil-based paint and other hazardous household waste. Gather up any cans of unused oil-based paint needing disposal, up to 20 gallons per household. Four 5-gallon cans of paint, 20 single gallons or any combination equal to 20 gallons is allowed for household disposal. Seal the lids securely before loading to stop spills. Drying latex paint renders it safe to dispose of in regular garbage, according to the Kenosha Water Utility.

Take the unused paint to the Kenosha Water Utility on Green Bay Road on the first Saturday of the month between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., if you live within Kenosha city limits. Outside city limits, but residing within Kenosha County, there are twice yearly disposal dates, both planned for a Saturday during spring and fall. For future dates, call Waste Management at 262-857-7956. Unload the cans of paint in the designated manner and area as directed.

Reducing the amount sent to landfills can be better for everyone. List usable paint on a local Freecycle site to find someone needing paint to finish a project. This is meant to keep usable items out of landfills. This avoids waste and offers others something needed.
