Configure a WiiKey

The WiiKey "mod chip" is available in three distinct versions. The WiiKey 1 and 2 models require users to solder the chip into the console while the 2010 version, the WiiKey Fusion, is a plug and play device with minimal installation requirements. The WiiKey configuration process requires an original Wii game disc from your video region (NTSC for North America or PAL for Europe) and an update disc to install the current firmware version and personalized settings.

Things You'll Need

  • CD/DVD burning software
  • Blank DVD +R disc
  • Original Wii game disc

Instructions

    • 1

Open the WiiKey "Member's Area" registration web page (see Resources).

    • 2

Fill out the required information and submit the form. Log in to the supplied email account and open the confirmation email to confirm your account information. Registration is required to gain access to the firmware update download files.

    • 3

Click on "Log In" on the WiiKey website and enter your log in information to enter the member's area.

    • 4

Select the latest update and configuration file for your WiiKey model. Follow the onscreen instructions to download the ISO file to your desktop.

    • 5

Open your CD/DVD burning software and select the ISO image downloaded in the previous step. Insert the blank DVD disc and select the slowest burning speed available. Press "start" or "burn" to create the disc.

    • 6

Turn on the Wii and insert an original game disc from your video region (NTSC or PAL). Select the Wii game from the main menu and press the "A" button to launch the game. This programs the WiiKey to only look for automatic updates for your particular region.

    • 7

Press the reset button on the console and eject the Wii game disc.

    • 8

Insert the update and configuration disc and select the disc from the game channel on the main menu. The disc will appear as a Gamecube game. Highlight the disc icon and press "A" to launch the configuration menu.

    • 9

Select the desired settings and scroll down to the "Save Settings" option and press the "A" button. In most cases, the only setting that should be changed from its factory default is the "Region Patch" that allows users to play discs from any video region.

    • 10

Reset the system and insert any original or backup copy of a Wii game disc to begin playing as normal.
