How to Convert a ABA File Type to a DBA File Type

Save

Palm handhelds using PalmOS used a proprietary compression format for their archives, with an extension of .ABA. They were later supplanted by the DBA file format, which had the same function. The Palm Desktop software will import these files and convert ABA files to DBA files. Unfortunately, while newer versions of the software would convert the file format when the software was upgraded, they did not have an explicit "Import From Older Versions" option.

  • Download version 4.1 of the Palm Desktop software; see the Resources section for the URL.

  • Double click the installer; let the installation wizard run the installer.

  • Launch the Palm Desktop application and navigate to the location where the ABA archives are stored. Load them into the software package.

  • Quit the software package.

  • Download version 6.2 of the Palm Desktop software.

  • Double-click the installer; let the installation wizard install the software.

  • Launch the Palm Desktop application; it will automatically convert the old ABA archives to DBA archives.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to get your Palm contacts in a format that can be read by other programs, like Gmail, you can go to "File" > "Export" and select "CSV," which exports an ABA or DBA file to a comma separate value text file.
