How to Measure the Water Level Line in a Well

The water level in your well fluctuates depending on the season and your source of well water. You should measure the depth of your well four to six times a year, according to the Oregon State University Extension Service. Measuring the depth of your well water can tell you whether your well is drying up and it can help you estimate the well's recovery rate. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a plumb bob, hex nut or other small weight to the end of a kite line or cotton string. Attach a fishing bobber on the same line, an inch above the weight.

    • 2

Remove the cap or lid from the well. Lower the weight on the string into the well.

    • 3

Feed the string into the well opening until it goes slack -- when the bobber hits the water, you won't feel the weight on the string anymore. This tells you that the weight is right below the surface of the water.

    • 4

Hold the string against the lip of the well. Mark the string with a marking pen to indicate the spot where it reaches the well edge. Pull the string up out of the well. Replace the cap.

    • 5

Measure the string from the weight to the marking you made. This distance is the depth of your well from the top to the water line.
