How to Remove or Turn Off the MobileMe Sync

MobileMe is a collection of Internet-based software developed by Apple. Users can synchronize calendars and email and store files in their MobileMe account and access the information from their iPhone, iPad or other Macintosh computer. The service was previously named .mac before being re-branded in 2008. In some cases, MobileMe icons are present on computers without a subscription to the service. If you do not have an active MobileMe account, you can remove the MobileMe icon from your menu bar and prevent it from taking up desktop real estate. This is a simple task that will only take a few seconds.

Without a MobileMe Subscription

  • Go to your computer desktop.

  • Hold down the "Command" (Apple) key on your keyboard and click the "MobileMe" icon on the menu bar.

  • Hold down the "Command" key and mouse button and drag the "MobileMe" icon to an area of the screen not taken up by the menu bar. The icon will disappear and MobileMe will be removed.

With a MobileMe Subscription

  • Click the "System Preferences" icon from your Dock.

  • Click the "MobileMe" icon.

  • Click the "Sync" tab and uncheck the "Show Status In Menu Bar" and "Synchronize With MobileMe" checkboxes.

  • Close "System Preferences." The MobileMe icon will be removed from the menu bar and the sync will be stopped.
