How to Replace the Compaq C500's Keyboard

      Shut down your C500. Unplug the power cord and any other cables. Turn the laptop upside down and slide the battery release lever to remove the battery.

      Turn the laptop upright and open the display. Pry the trim panel off the top of the keyboard area with a flat-bladed screwdriver.

      Remove the two screws securing the keyboard to the computer with a small Phillips screwdriver. Lift the keyboard up out of the computer. Pull the keyboard connection apart and remove the keyboard from the computer.

      Align the new keyboard near the palm rests of the laptop. Connect the cable to the back of the keyboard by pushing the two ends together. Lay the keyboard in place and secure the two screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

      Align the trim bezel around the top of the keyboard. Press it securely into place until it clicks. Turn the laptop upside down and insert the battery into the mounting area.

      Turn the laptop upright. Reconnect the cables, including the power cord.
