How to Tell a Guy You're Fat in Online Dating

Internet daters need to confront a whole new world of dating etiquette. In increasing numbers, singles feel comfortable looking for a partner through Internet dating. The BBC World Service Global reports that 21 percent of Americans feel confident dating online. One advantage that Internet daters have is that they can hide blemishes and imperfections as they get to know each other. But at some point, if the relationship can continue, individuals must share the truth about issues and problems that they may have hesitated to discuss. If a woman is overweight, she must tell her date openly and honestly.

  • Don't lie. Even if you haven't told the guy that you're overweight yet, don't send false information or misleading pictures that you'll have to retract later. The guy may not mind that you're fat, but he will definitely look down on you if you lie or mislead him. If you don't feel ready to tell him exactly what you look like, keep the conversation about your appearance neutral.

  • Prepare the guy by bringing up the subject of your weight when you feel that the online conversations have progressed to the point that you may meet. Write honestly. Say that you know that your weight may present a problem for some men, but that the various components of your profile includes your weight, and you want to present that information honestly.

  • Tell him with a picture. Suggest exchanging photos and send him a nice one of you.

  • Accept the guy's reaction. If he can't deal with your weight, say good-bye and move on.
