How to Repack a Tip Up

How to Repack a Tip Up thumbnail
Tip ups make ice fishing a little easier than this.

Ice fishing tip ups are small, truncated fishing rod and reel set-ups that use a modified lever to balance the rod into position. Benefits to this style of set-up is being hands-free from the rod, a wonderful thing when the mercury is below freezing. The tip up is sensitive to the fish strike, tipping up on the rear end once a fish strikes. If the tip up goes off, or a fish hits the line, you need to reset and repack the tip up.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out the ice and snow hole where the tip up's holding fork is placed. Repack the snow and ice around the holding fork or stick to ensure adequate support to the tip up.

    • 2

Check and inspect the fishing hook. If the bait has been taken, rebait the hook with your chosen fishing bait for the day. Check the split shot sinkers or weights are on the line. If lost, add tow small split shot sinkers to the line, 6 to 8 inches above the hook.

    • 3

Drop the line back into the ice fishing hole and line out the reel and line.

    • 4

Tilt the tip up back so the front portion of the rod is higher than the rear end of the rod. Balance this position in the tip up holder fork or stick.

    • 5

Wait and watch for the tip up' rear end to go up, signaling a fish strike. Retrieve the fish.
