How to Crack Large Ceramic Tiles
Before ceramic tiles are installed in a wall or floor they are very weak and easy to crack. This makes ceramic tiles the perfect material for a mosaic. Place the large ceramic tiles into a strong garbage bag. If the tiles are too large you can also slip them between two drop cloths.

Put on gloves, long sleeves, and eye goggles. Even though you are cracking the large ceramic tiles in a bag or in between two drop cloths, shards of tile can still fly into your eyes and uncovered skin. It is important to protect yourself from injury with the proper safety precautions.

Decide how you want to crack and break the ceramic tiles. If you are want small mosaic pieces you will need to work carefully to break the tile apart in tiny pieces without crushing it. On the other hand a few simple hits with a hammer can break a large ceramic tile into a few larger pieces.

Use a hammer and a nail set to break the tiles into pieces. The nail set will help you crack the tiles at a specific place whereas the hammer will break the tile in a general area. Break the tiles until you are happy with the results.

Remove the pieces from the garbage bag or drop cloths. Vacuum up the excess dust and shards of tile.
