Car alarms are effective theft deterrents when installed and used properly. Most alarm systems come with a key-chain remote so you can turn your alarm system on and off with ease. If you've lost your remote, however, you may experience a moment when your car alarm goes off accidentally and you don't know how to stop it. By following a few steps, you can silence your car alarm and keep your neighbors happy.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the car. This action will cause most alarms to stop.

    • 2

Unlock your doors manually if you aren't already in the car. Some alarm systems will shut off when they detect a door being unlocked with a key.

    • 3

Turn off the alarm, using the alarm key. Open your hood and locate the alarm system. On top of the system, there should be a place for an alarm key. If you have one handy, place the key in and turn to the right. This will manually disable the alarm.

Disconnect the battery. Use the ratchet to unscrew the bolt that keeps the negative battery wire attached to the battery. When this wire is disconnected, power to your vehicle will be gone, and the alarm will stop.
