How to Repair an RG-6 Coaxial Cable

How to Repair an RG-6 Coaxial Cable thumbnail
Knowing how to repair RG-6 coaxial cable is a handy skill.

Repairing a coaxial cable does not automatically mean full removal and replacement. Coaxial cables are designed to be field terminated, so repairing the cable in the case of puncture or water ingress is not overly difficult. In fact, the tools required are available at nearly every major big-box home improvement store. Since RG-6 cable is capable of carrying everything from digital television, broadband Internet and other digital media sources, keeping the cabling in a high state of working order is a good idea.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the damaged spot on the cable. Cut the damaged section off with the wire cutters.

    • 2

Place the cut end of the coax into the stripper, one inch from the end. Squeeze the handles of the stripper to engage the cable.

    • 3

Rotate the stripper around the cable to score the jacket. Pull the stripper off the cable while still squeezing the handles to remove the unwanted material.

    • 4

Fold the inner shielding back against the out jacket, keeping the shield strands away from the center conductor.

    • 5

Slide the new connector over the end of the cable. Make sure the inner collar butts firmly against the inner white plastic surrounding the copper center conductor.

    • 6

Slip the collar of the connector into the crimp tool. Squeeze the handles of the crimp tool to complete the termination.

    • 7

Screw the male-to-male joiner into the new connector. Screw a new piece of RG-6 coax to the joiner to complete the run to the splitter or device as required.
