How to Use the Virtual Capo on a James Tyler Variax Guitar
James Tyler Variax guitars are the most recent additions to Line 6's Variax guitar line. While Line 6 has long been on solid footing in the digital modeling market, its partnership with world-renowned luthier James Tyler has resulted in a series of instruments that would be noteworthy even without the advancements in digital modeling that these guitars represent. Worth particular note is the handy Alternate Tuning knob found on all JTV models, which allows users to quickly switch between tuning configurations. The virtual capo function refers to the JTVs' ability to be set to customized tuning configurations on the guitar itself rather than requiring a computer connection.

1
Plug your Variax Digital cable into the digital output hole on your JTV guitar and into the hole labeled "Variax" on your VDI capable product.
-
2
Tune your guitar to standard tuning (EADGBE) using a guitar tuner, piano or any other tool that can ensure your instrument is tuned correctly.
-
-
3
Press and hold the Guitar Model Selector until you see the backlights behind both this knob and the Alternate Tuning knob flashing. You are now in Variax Mode and can access your guitar's digital capabilities.
-
4
Turn your Alternate Tuning knob to a preloaded tuning you are willing to temporarily save over. For example, save over the Baritone alternate tuning. Preloaded tunings can easily be restored later.
-
5
Pluck each string for which you would like to create an alternate tuning, fretting the string (pressing the string to the neck) in the desired location. When setting a customized tuning, the 12th fret marks the location of the nut (or the end of the neck, just below the head). So, for example, to set a string to a lower tuning than "standard," fret the string the desired distance below the 12th fret and pluck.

6
Press the Guitar Model Selector to listen to the tuning you have created. If one or more strings needs to be retuned, press the Guitar Model Selector again, and pluck only those strings that need altering. Then press the Guitar Model Selector again to hear your customized tuning
-
7
Press and hold the Guitar Model Selector to save your customized tuning.
