How to Position the Discharge Hose on a Washing Machine

How to Position the Discharge Hose on a Washing Machine thumbnail
The discharge hose clears the water out of your washing machine.

The discharge hose for your washing machine diverts the tub drain water to your house drain pipe or the laundry sink. Replacing a discharge hose requires you to purchase a kit that includes the plastic form that helps position the discharge hose. When positioning the hose, avoid bending or twisting it as this can cause drainage failure. Washing machine discharge hose kits are available at appliance stores and home improvement centers. Instructions

    • 1

Place a hose clamp over one end of the discharge hose. Push the end of the hose over the drain opening on the back of the washer. Secure the hose to the washer drain with the clamp.

    • 2

Insert the opposite end of the hose into the curved plastic form that comes with the kit. The form is either a piece of plastic into which the side of the hose fits, or a solid plastic pipe that fits into the end of the discharge hose. Either piece is U-shaped, to form a hook on the end of the hose.

    • 3

Place the end of the hose into the discharge pipe, resting the inside of the hook on the edge of the pipe. Tie the hook to the pipe with a plastic zip tie. Rest the hook over the side of a laundry tub, if there is no house discharge pipe.
