How to Make a Pretend Police Car for Kids

Save

If you have a child who enjoys playing cops and robbers, you can encourage this imaginative play by providing your child with a topical craft. For example, you can show your child how to create a pretend police car out of a shoe box. Once the shoe box car is completed, it can be decorated to resemble a police car with acrylic paint and used by your child during pretend play.

Things You'll Need

  • Shoe box
  • 4 paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Paper towel tube
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue stick
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint the outside of a show box with white acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.

  • Paint a 2-inch wide black stripe along the perimeter of the box base with black acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. This will be the base of the police car.

  • Paint half of a paper towel tube with red acrylic paint, and the other half with blue acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. This will be the siren of the police car.

  • Hot glue the lid of the shoe box onto the box base with hot glue. Allow the glue to cool and harden completely.

  • Hot glue the painted paper towel tube perpendicularly onto the shoe box lid, and allow the glue to cool and harden completely.

  • Paint four paper plates with black acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. These will be the wheels of the police car.

  • Hot glue a painted paper plate onto the shoe box, two paper plates per side to represent the wheels of the police car. Allow the hot glue to cool and harden completely before allowing your child to play with the pretend police car.
