Although credit cards are the preferred method of payment to rent a car, they are not the only form of payment. Many rental car companies will also accept debit cards and cash under certain conditions. It is important to make sure that you meet those conditions and that you are prepared ahead of time with the proper documents to insure a smooth transaction once you get to the rental car agency.
Check to make sure your debit card is not a prepaid or store value debit card. These are not accepted by car rental agencies.
Look for the VISA or MasterCard logo on the front of your debit card. If you see this logo, chances are you can rent from any rental car agency.
Reserve a car ahead of time by booking it online. You can also call the agency directly. Use the information on the debit card to book the car. You will need the account number on the card, the expiration date, and sometimes the security code on the back of the card. Make sure you specify the exact dates the car is needed during the booking process.
Bring your debit card and driver's license with you when you go to pick up the car.
Call the rental car company directly to make sure you qualify to pay in cash. This cannot be done over the Internet.
Book the car reservation if you qualify to pay in cash.
Gather together two current utility bills, your most recent pay stub, valid driver's license, insurance card, and several references. You will need these to rent a car with cash.
Bring the documents you gathered plus the cost of the entire rental to the agency on the day you are scheduled to pick up the car. Most rental car agencies will also require a minimum deposit for those paying in cash in addition to the rental fees. Make sure you find out the total needed before you head over to the car rental agency.
