How to Transfer QuickTime MP3 File to iTunes

QuickTime and iTunes both allow you to listen to MP3 files on your computer, but iTunes offers more versatility in the way it allows you to sort your music into playlists, edit the track options and transfer files to an iPod or iPhone. If you have a QuickTime MP3 that you formatted using QuickTime Pro or simply downloaded as a QuickTime file, you can quickly transfer it to the more multifaceted iTunes program.

  • Locate your QuickTime MP3 file on your hard drive. QuickTime-formatted MP3s feature a blue letter Q in the center of the file icon. Your file may appear anywhere depending on your saving preferences, but is commonly found in your default music folder. Open your Documents folder, followed by Music. Your file may also appear on your desktop or in your downloads folder.

  • Open iTunes by clicking the Start menu in the lower left corner of your screen and locating the iTunes software among your programs.

  • Click your QuickTime MP3 with your mouse and drag it directly onto your iTunes window. By default, the file will save in your Music library, which you can access by clicking the Music link in the left column. If you want to save your file in a playlist, click the New Playlist button in the lower left corner of your window. Drag the MP3 file directly onto the playlist title in your left column. You can now listen to the file in iTunes or transfer it to your iPod or iPhone mobile device.
