The iTunes App Store offers several applications (apps) for the iPhone that enable you to use the phone as a remote control for your television. Before purchasing a remote app, read the instructions and app details to ensure it works with your television. Prices for the apps vary depending on the type of television you own and the features included with the program, such as customizable versions.
Download the Bobby Universal Remote from iTunes. The app costs $39.99 and allows you to customize the remote to your desired layout. Not only can the Bobby control your television, it also serves as a remote for your DVR, home theater system, lighting and alarm systems, and more. The program requires the Global Cache IR-Learner, GC Blaster, and IR-Out equipment to set up and use the remote.
Download one of the iMasterControl apps from iTunes. These apps work with a home "base station" which sends commands to the television after receiving WI-FI signals from your phone. The Pro version sells for $149.99 and offers the greatest amount of flexibility, but also requires custom programming. The GC version allows customization but is easier to program and sells for $69.99. If customizing the remote is not a top priority, purchase the stripped-down Lite version for only $10.99.
If you own an Apple TV, download the Remote app by Apple from iTunes. This free app allows you to control iTunes and Apple TV from any spot at home. Use the iPhone keyboard to search for titles, change a song or show, and control the speaker volume using only WI-FI.
