Accidents can occur when animals or humans urinate on couches. Water, electrolytes and waste products in urine absorb into couch upholstery, producing a distinctive odor. The longer that urine odor and stains remain on couches, the more difficult they become to remove. Lingering pet urine odor encourages animals to urinate on the affected areas. According to the Humane Society, pets can smell traces of urine that humans cannot. However, basic supplies can effectively get a urine smell out of couches.
Things You'll Need
- Paper towels
- Spray bottle
- Cold water
- Wet vacuum with attachment
- Enzymatic odor neutralizer
Blot the urine-soaked upholstery with paper towels. Remove as much liquid as possible from the upholstery. Skip this step if the stain is already dry.
Fill a spray bottle with cold water. Spray the water liberally onto the affected area of the couch.
Extract the water and any remaining urine from the couch upholstery using a wet vacuum attachment. Operate the vacuum according to the manufacturer's directions.
Apply an enzymatic odor neutralizer directly to the couch upholstery. Follow the product manufacturer's directions on the label. Keep the odor neutralizer on the upholstery for the recommended time.
Extract the enzymatic neutralizer from the upholstery, using the wet vacuum attachment.
Tips & Warnings
- Rent a wet vacuum from a local hardware store.
- Test the enzymatic odor neutralizer on an inconspicuous area of the upholstery to ensure no damage or discoloration occurs.
- Do not use steam cleaners on the upholstery; heat makes urine odors virtually impossible to remove.
- Do not use ammonia, vinegar or cleaning chemicals; strong scents can encourage pets to urinate on the couch again.
