How to Change NIC Order

In some larger networks, the Windows server has more than one network interface card (NIC). When you bind the network card with the operating system, the Windows system binds in a certain order with the first card in the list of priority bound first. You can change this order in the server's network settings for the network card. This is beneficial if you have network resources that need to use the priority NIC over other network cards installed on the system.

  • Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel." In the opened window, click "Network and Sharing Center." This is a window that lists all your configuration options and the network cards installed on your computer.

  • Click the "Manage network connections" on the left side of the window. Hold the "Alt" button down. With the keyboard button pressed, press "N" at the same time. This opens an advanced menu.

  • Click "Advanced Settings" and then click the "Adapters and Bindings" tab. Click the network card you want to set as the priority.

  • Click the "Up" arrow button on the right of the window. This moves the selected network card up in the list of priority. Click "OK" to save your settings.
