Even after acne blemishes disappear, they leave behind a visible reminder of their existence in the form of scars. In some cases, the scars are even darker and more pronounced than the original pimples. There are many different types of acne scars: bumpy, fleshy ones, flat ones and depressed ones. Some scars are actually just shallow circles of discoloration, while others are deep "ice pick" indentations. Treatment varies depending on the type of scars on the face.

Get a microdermabrasion treatment. In this process, a sandblaster-like machine is used to remove a very fine layer of the scarred skin. This stimulates the growth of new, healthy and scar-free skin. Several treatments are often necessary for best results.

Get fractional laser therapy. This is a skin resurfacing treatment that works by removing damaged skin tissue in fractions. It's the ideal treatment for patients who have acne scars concentrated on one area of the face like the cheeks or forehead. Multiple treatments may be necessary before all the acne scars are removed.

Try excision to remove fleshy keloid scars. An excision is a minor surgical procedure in which the raised scars are cut off. The wound is then stitched closed.

Get collagen injections. If you have deep depressions from acne on your face, the best way to get them filled is with collagen injections that restore the missing skin.

Use skin lightening creams to remove discolorations and red marks. These topical lotions can be obtained over the counter and by prescription. The active ingredients include licorice extract, kojic acid and hydroquinone, all of which are powerful skin lighteners that can fade shallow acne marks.

Use a topical pockmark filler to remove depressed acne scars on the face. These are available over the counter and are best for milder depressions.

Exfoliate your skin daily to slough off the damaged skin layers containing the acne scars. You can use chemical exfoliants like salicylic and glycolic acid, or a facial scrub with little exfoliating beads. Within a few weeks of regular use, the exfoliation will help to fade and remove smaller acne scars.

Tip

  • Consult a dermatologist to help you determine which treatment is best for you. When using a skin lightener, avoid sun exposure or apply sunscreen everytime you go out. Sun exposure when using a skin lightener will make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Tip

  • Don't pick at your scars as this will only make them worse.
