How Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid in the XC90?

Maintaining fluid levels in your Volvo XC90 plays a role in keeping your car on the road and avoiding unnecessary repairs. The transmission fluid acts as a lubricant for the transmission so that your car can shift gears. When fluid levels are low, the transmission can malfunction or switch gears slowly, making it dangerous to drive your vehicle. The key to checking levels is the transmission dipstick. Fluid should register at or somewhat above the fill line on the dipstick. If it falls below this line, you must add more fluid.

Things You'll Need

• Long, thin funnel
• Transmission fluid
• Paper towels

Instructions

1. Start your Volvo. The engine must be warm to check fluid levels.

2. Lift the hood and prop it open.

3. Find the transmission dipstick at the back of the engine. It will have a yellow or red handle. Pull the dipstick from its fluid well.

4. Wipe off any fluid with a paper towel.

5. Reinsert the dipstick into the fluid well.

6. Remove the dipstick from the fluid well. If the transmission fluid registers below the "Fill" line on the dipstick, insert the funnel in the well and add fluid as needed.
