A key ingredient in running a successful business is providing a solution to people's problems. For example, people always need clean clothes to wear--but they don't always find the time to do laundry. By starting a laundry business, you can capitalize on this problem with little more than a washer and dryer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local Small Business Administration Office to learn what legal steps are necessary to start your business. Permits and fees may not be necessary, but you may have to pay fines if you don't learn about and obtain them before you open for business.

    • 2

Give your business a name that clearly indicates that it's a laundry business. For example, "Lisa's Laundry Service" is more descriptive than "Lisa's."

    • 3

Make flyers for your business stating the name of the business, what hours you'll accept laundry, your prices and contact information. Post the flyers in areas where potential customers are likely to go. For example, maternity stores are more likely to earn you customers than college campuses. Make sure to get a manager's permission before posting your flyers.

    • 4

Keep customers' laundry separate when you accept it, either by picking it up yourself or having the customer deliver it. Use colored laundry bags or baskets to do this if you don't have a lot of room to keep sorted by customer.

    • 5

Wash and dry each item according to the care instructions on its tag. Even if you don't do this with your own laundry, take care to avoid destroying customers' clothes.

    • 6

Iron each item according to the care instructions on its tag. Use starch to give items a crisp, finished look.

    • 7

Contact each customer when his laundry is ready. Or, hold onto his clothing if you already agreed upon a time when his laundry would be finished.

    • 8

Post ads to sell your washer and dryer once you no longer need them (if, for example, you want to upgrade to newer models). This allows you to make the most money from them.
