Discount decor items can help to ease the financial burden of decorating. By finding items at a discount, you can afford more for your budget and create the look that you want for each room in your home.

1. Make a list of what you want to do in each room. Visiting a store without a plan can cause you to purchase more than you need. Walk around each room with a notepad and write down exactly what needs to be purchased and include the sizes for accessories such a curtains, throw rugs and wall hangings.

2. Look through interior decorating magazines or online websites to get an idea of the design style you like best. Opt for something that you will be comfortable with, rather than a current trend, as trends quickly go out of style. Look at color and material options and general decor. Take notes on the types of decor items used. Write any details or specific types of items you like on your list .

3. Visit two or three department or home interior stores to price the items on your list. Do not purchase anything; just write the prices and the product name of the items that closely match what you want. This serves as your guide for what you want and how much it will cost you at retail prices.

4. Visit local flea markets, garage sales, dollar shops and secondhand stores. Look for items that fit the descriptions on your list and compare the prices with the retail prices you've written down. Purchase items from your list at stores like these.

5. Check the websites of the original retail stores you visited to purchase the remaining items that you couldn't find at thrift stores, dollar shops and garage sales. Look for online discounts or sales on the items you originally looked at. If you cannot find any online deals, decide whether paying full price for a few items is feasible after saving so much on the other items.
