An alarm can be shut off by removing its power supply.

Car alarms can be your best friend when they're working properly but can be a nightmare when they go off inadvertently. The problem can be made even worse if you can't shut off your alarm. The 1997 Honda Accord, like most cars, has an easy fix to this problem: just disconnect the car battery. This will shut off power to the alarm and cause it to reset.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all power to your car. You will be working under the hood of your Accord. As such, you want everything to be off.

    • 2

Use a wrench to disconnect the wire attached to the negative terminal of the battery. This will turn off all the power to your car and shut off the alarm.

    • 3

Fasten the terminal to the battery after one minute. You'll have to wait this amount of time to allow the alarm to reset.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 if the alarm stays on. This time, disconnect the battery for several minutes to ensure the alarm has enough time to reset. Most of the time, though, the alarm should reset after just one minute.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disconnecting the battery will cause you to lose the presets on your radio stations. Write the stations down before you disconnect the battery. You will have to program them into the radio again.

  • In rare occasions, the alarm on your 1997 Accord will continue to go off even after you follow these procedures. You'll have to take your car to a mechanic or dealership to resolve the issue if it persists.

  • Give your car time to cool down if your alarm goes off after driving. The engine will be hot and you will increase the chances of burning yourself if you don't allow your car to cool down.
