How to Make a Dream Sachet

Dream sachets have been used to induce a restful night's sleep since long before sedatives or sleep aids came into widespread use. Dream sachets are small fabric pouches filled with a mixture of various herbs and tucked into a pillowcase or under the bottom sheet of a baby's crib. A dream sachet can be used to allow a person to fall asleep easily, or to induce pleasant dreams. They are safe for people of all ages.

  • 1/4 cup dried mugwort
  • 1/4 cup dried catnip
  • 1/4 cup dried lavender flowers

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the dried herbs in a bowl.

    • 2

Cut a strip of fabric 5 inches wide and 12 inches long.

    • 3

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with right sides facing and sew two sides together. Leave one side open to fill the pouch.

    • 4

Turn the pouch right side out.

    • 5

Place a small amount of cotton batting into the bottom of the pouch and add 1/2 cup of the dried herb mixture. Place a small amount of cotton batting or fiber fill on top of the herbs.

    • 6

Turn the top edge to the inside of the pouch and hand-sew it closed.

    • 7

Place the dream sachet inside the pillowcase of the pillow you sleep on, or between the bottom sheet and the mattress.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash the fabric with unscented soap and dry it without fabric softener sheets. Fabric sizing, dye and scented laundry products may interfere with the scent and effect of the herbs.

  • Substitute mugwort, catnip and lavender with any herbs that help you sleep.

  • Mugwort is for external use only. Do not let toddlers or young children chew on dream sachets.

  • Some people recommend using a drop or two of essential oil to enhance the scent of the herbs. However, the essential oils may be too overpowering to allow a restful sleep.

  • Fixatives such as cellulose or orris root add their own scent to the mixture, and orris root may cause severe headaches in some people.
