Fuel filters clean out any fuel impurities before they can reach the engine.

Locating the fuel filter underneath your 1992 Oldsmobile may seem difficult. However, using a few simple steps, you can distinguish it from the many other auto-carriage, fuel and transmission-related parts underneath the vehicle. Fuel filters, over time and usage, can clog up or simply go bad and must be replaced for the vehicle to operate properly. Locating the part is the first step toward replacement and reviving the health of your car.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull your vehicle up on car ramps and place the transmission in park. Be sure to lock the parking brake as well to prevent the possibility of sliding or rolling.

    • 2

Climb under the vehicle and locate the fuel line coming off the gas tank in the rear. This will be located along an indentation in the fuel tank.

    • 3

Follow the fuel line away from the tank as it approaches the engine carriage.

    • 4

Look for a bend as the fuel line reaches the engine carriage and turns to align itself alongside the transmission housing.

    • 5

Locate the fuel filter on the end of the fuel line as it connects into the injection assembly. The filter is a large, cylindrical part, located inside an aluminum housing. It will have a small cap to the side jutting out next to the fuel line.

Tips & Warnings

  • It will be much easier to locate the fuel pump during prime daylight hours, rather than early morning or the evening.

  • Always use caution when working underneath a propped vehicle.
