Instructions for Tying Two-Sided Fleece Blankets

Many people think making a blanket must involve plenty of careful stitching, but no-sew fleece blankets can be made easily and quickly without a single stitch. The fleece used for blankets does not unravel when cut and needs no hemming. Tied tassels keep the two sides of the blanket together. Polar fleece is available in many colors and patterns. Tied two-sided fleece blankets can be customized for the recipient's favorite colors, sports team or school.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose polar fleece in one or two colors or patterns and cut to desired size. According to Project Linus most bolts of fleece come in widths between 50 and 60 inches. Project Linus also suggests removing the selvage edges, the thickly woven outer edges along either side of the fabric. Selvage edges can be found on the two sides of the fabric that were not cut when the fabric was purchased. Cut the fabric to a rectangle or square shape.

    • 2

Cut identically sized squares from each of the corners. Be sure the length of the squares you remove is your desired length for the fringe. The two pieces of fabric should match in shape and size. Lay the fleece out, one directly on top of the other and pin together. Place the pins farther from the edge than the desired length of the fringe.

    • 3

Cut fringe into the edges of the fabric, cutting through both layers of fabric. Work one side at a time. Fringe does not have to be perfectly identical in length or width, but it looks better to keep it as even as possible.

    • 4

Tie the layers of fringe together, taking one strand from the top and one from the bottom for each knot. To make all the knots similar, Crafts for All Seasons recommends holding the fringe pieces around your hand and passing the ends of the fringe through them before removing your hand and carefully guiding the knot toward the blanket before pulling it taut to form a tassel. Start on one corner and work around the blanket. Remove the pins and the blanket is ready to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use very sharp scissors for this project, preferably sewing scissors. Dull scissors will be more difficult to cut with, particularly when cutting through two layers of thick fabric.
