How to Replace MSConfig From a CD for Vista

The MSConfig tool has been included in all versions of Windows from XP forward, and is designed to help Windows users customize and configure the various tools, processes and startup procedures in the Windows operating system. Occasionally, this tool may become corrupted or inaccessible due to viruses or simple mishandling of the computer itself. When this happens, it is possible to replace the corrupted version with a new and usable version from the Windows install disk.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu and select "All Programs."

    • 2

Click "Accessories" and right click the "Command Prompt" option. Choose "Run as Administrator" and type in your administrator password (if applicable) to launch the "Command Prompt" window.

    • 3

Insert your Windows Vista install disk into your computer's CD/DVD drive.

    • 4

Type "sfc /scannow" into the "Command Prompt" window and press "Enter." Windows will now scan through your system files--of which MSConfig is one--and replace any corrupt or missing files with the default files from the Windows Vista install disk.
