How to Build a Simple, Easy Bookcase
A bookcase is simply a set of shelves used for storing books. Your bookcase can be as elaborate or as simple as you want to make it. A simple set of shelves that will keep your books off the floor and out of storage boxes can be built in very little time with only a few supplies. The most important consideration in building a simple bookcase is using good-quality lumber that will not splinter and damage your books. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- 4 2-by-4 boards, 3 feet long
- Drill with ¼-inch and Phillips bits
- 3-inch wood screws
- 3 2-by-8 boards, 3 feet long
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses

Lay your 2-by-4 boards side by side with their wide sides facing up. Stretch your tape measure along the length of each board. Make a pencil mark at ¾ inch, 18 inches, and 35¼ inches on each board.

Drill a pair of ¼-inch holes side by side at each mark on every board. Switch to your Phillips bit. Drive a wood screw ½ inch into each guide hole in your boards.

Stand your 2-by-8 boards onto their edges. Arrange the boards parallel to each other. Leave 17¼ inches of space between each pair of boards.

Lay two of your 2-by-4 boards across all three of the larger boards. Move the 2-by-4 boards so that the outer edge of one 2-by-4 is flush with the ends of the three larger boards and the other 2-by-4 is flush with the opposite ends of the larger boards. Drive each pair of screws in your smaller boards into the edge of a larger board.

Gently flip the assembly. Attach the remaining 2-by-4 boards flush with the ends of your shelf boards to complete the bookcase. Stand the unit up and place it against a wall so that you can stock it with books.

Tips & Warnings
Attach thin paneling to the sides and back of your bookcase with small tacks.
Always use work gloves and safety glasses when using hand and power tools.
