How to Make a Muffler for a Small Engine

Nathaniel Miller

Small engines are present on a variety of garden tools and machinery including tillers, chainsaws, and lawn mowers. The majority of these small engines come equipped with mufflers, but some do not. It is relatively easy to build your own muffler for a small engine, and your ears and neighbors will thank you in the long run.

  1. Use the welder to weld the end of the smaller exhaust tubing onto the end of your current exhaust outlet.

  2. Use the hacksaw to cut the newly welded tubing to a length of 3 inches. Weld the other larger piece of tubing onto the end of the smaller diameter tubing.

  3. Use the welder to weld a piece of sheet metal over the end of the larger diameter tubing and then use the drill to drill a series of 50 or so holes in the sheet metal to allow the exhaust gases to escape.
