Transferring video or programming from your Dish DVR system to a computer will require the use of a video capture device or a TV tuner. A video capture device acts as an input source for the video from the DVR, which will allow you to view it on your computer. However, you will need to first set up the device and install the software onto your computer before connecting the Dish DVR.

Set Up USB Video Capture Device

Insert the installation CD into the CD/DVD drive for the computer. Wait for the "Installation Wizard" or "Setup" screen to appear.

Click the "Next" button. Follow the instructions on the screen. Click the "Finish" button to complete the installation.

Insert the USB end of the video capture device into a USB port on the front or back of the computer. Wait while Windows recognizes the device and installs the software drivers.

Record to Computer

Plug one end of an RCA audio/video cable into the "video out" and "audio out" ports on the back of the DVR.

Plug the other end of the cable to the "video in" and "audio in" ports on the USB video capture device.

Double-click the icon on your desktop for the video capture software. You should see the picture that is currently on your DVR.

Click the "Record" option in the software and then press the "Play" button on the DVR. Wait for the video to finish and then click the "Stop" button.

Click the "File" drop-down and select the "Save" option. Save the video as an MPG or AVI file, to your hard drive or a flash drive.
