How Do S-Hooks Work for Pet Tags?

An S-hook for a dog tag is the wire piece that secures the tag to your dog's collar. Named for its distinctive "S" shape, you can use this piece of hardware to attach the tag with just a pair of pliers. The S-hook ensures that your pet's tags, which provide important contact information if your pet ever gets lost, won't detach from the collar.

Tip

An S-hook works by securing the tag on one side of the hook to the ring on your dog's collar on the other side of the hook. You can easily secure it with pliers.

S-hook for a dog tag

S-hooks are a strong and durable option for securing pet tags. They are simple to use but require a bit more work to install compared to some other options.

Collect your pet's tags, his collar, and a pair of pliers. Slide one end of the S-hook through the hole in your pet's tags. Depending on the size of the S-hook and the tags, you can usually place multiple tags on one S-hook. Secure the tags by using the pliers to squeeze that end of the S-hook closed.

Next, slide the other end of the S-hook through the ring on your pet's collar. Squeeze that end of the S-hook with the pliers until the tip closes into a loop. The S-hook should now look like an "8" rather than an "S." Make sure both ends are closed completely and that the tags won't be able to slip off the hook. If you ever need to remove the tags, pry open the loops of the closed S-hook with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Other types of dog accessories

An S-hook is not the only type of dog tag holder that you can use to attach your pet's tags to her collar. A split ring is easier to attach, but it is not as durable as an S-hook. You can add tags to a split ring the same way you would add keys to a key chain.

Another alternative is a dog tag clip. These are also less durable and more likely to break. However, they are a good option if you have multiple collars and harnesses for your dog and need to move the tags frequently. The clip can be quickly and easily transferred.

Pet ID tag considerations

A pet identification tag is incredibly important and may save your pet if he ever gets lost. The tag will tell anyone who finds your pet that he has a home and will also provide your contact information. Make sure the pet tag has your pet's name as well as your phone number and address. If your dog has a medical condition, be sure to include that information as well. None of this information will help your lost pet if the tags break off the collar.

Microchips are another great option for identifying your dog, but they do not make pet tags less important. A microchip can only be read with special equipment, so if your dog is lost, your contact information is not accessible until your pet is taken to a veterinary hospital or pet shelter where the chip can be read. You need to register the microchip with your information and keep that information updated. Otherwise, all the vet will see is the unique ID number.
