The iTunes application is mainly known as a music-playing program, but the more recent versions also contain the capability to play video files. If you have a movie in iTunes and want to separate the video from the audio, you can convert the file to the MP3 format, which will eliminate the video content and create an audio file. Be aware that converting a video file to an MP3 will permanently erase the video content.

Step 1

Launch the iTunes application on your Mac or PC computer.

Step 2

Go to "iTunes" in the top menu bar and select "Preferences."

Step 3

Go to the "Advanced" tab at the top of the window.

Step 4

Open the "Import Using" drop-down menu and select "MP3 Encoder" from the list of option.

Step 5

Close the "Preferences" window to save the settings and return to the main iTunes screen.

Step 6

Highlight the video file in your library that you want to convert to an audio file.

Step 7

Go to the "Advanced" menu and select the "Create MP3 Version" option. The iTunes program will now separate the video and audio portions of the file and create an MP3 file that contains only the audio data.
