How to Bury an Electric Dog Fence
One effective way to create a boundary for your dog without adding a visible fence is by installing an electric dog fence. The fence uses a buried wire that transmits a radio signal. Your dog wears a special collar that emits a correction signal when the dog approaches the boundary wire. Burying an electric dog fence does not require a large trench. Things You'll Need
- Spray paint
- Shovel
- Lawn edger
- Carpenter's chalk line (or piece of chalk)
- Circular saw with masonry blade
- Wooden paint stick
- Bag of topsoil
- Tube of concrete or asphalt sealer
- Caulking gun

Mark off the area where you want to bury the electric dog fence wire with spray paint. Walk where you want to put the fence and spray a 6-inch line every few feet. This gives you a marker when digging the trench. Use a chalk line or a piece of standard chalk to mark over driveways and concrete walkways, if the electric dog fence must pass over one of these.

Dig a 3-inch-deep trench along the entire perimeter of the boundary with a shovel. Simply insert the shovel 3 inches into the soil and lift the sod out of the trench. A quicker way is to use a lawn edger. Set the edger to the 3-inch depth and cut the trench.

Cut a 3-inch-deep trench along the walkway or driveway with a masonry blade in a circular saw. Remember to wear eye and ear protection when cutting with a circular saw.

Lay out the electric fence boundary wire according to the manufacturer's instructions. Insert the wire into the trench, pressing it down with a wooden paint stick.

Place the sod over the trench and gently tamp down with your foot. If you cut the trench with a lawn edger, place the dirt the edger left behind over the wire and trench. It may be necessary to purchase a bag of topsoil, if the lawn edger scattered the dirt as it cut the trench.

Fill the trench in walkways or driveways with sealer and a caulking gun. Asphalt and concrete sealers are available in tube form at home improvement centers. Continue the rest of the fence installation and training according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips & Warnings
If you are not establishing a perimeter around the entire property, you must form a double loop of wire. This requires two trenches side by side approximately 3- to 5-feet apart.
