1
Paint a mural on the walls that depict a train, train station and open fields with a blue sky if you plan on keeping the train theme for a few years. Hang a border featuring a train or railroad tracks if you can't paint the walls or don't want to commit to a mural. Another option is to use peel-and-stick decals to add a train mural that's easy to remove and update later.

2
Place furniture in the room that complements your train theme. A simple bed or bunk beds will work if you want to replicate a train car. Opt for a themed bed that looks like an engine or caboose or make a train-shaped headboard out of plywood. Dark wood furniture is ideal for an older child or adult, light furniture and silver finishes are best for younger children. Swap out the drawer knobs on your child's dresser for train knobs.

3
Use bedding with images of trains or railroad crossing signs if the walls aren't overly decorated. Use solid-colored bedding with a couple of train-shaped toss pillows if you painted a detailed mural on the walls. Hang curtains that complement the bedding. Dress up plain curtains with a train-themed valance if you desire.

4
Hang wall decor that pulls the room together. Black-and-white photos of old trains and railroads will enhance a luxurious train car feel. Images of train characters are good for toddlers who have a favorite. Railroad crossing signs, signals or a personalized name sign that spells out the child's name on trains are other options.

5
Accessorize the room with train-themed items to finalize your train theme. A train bank can sit on top of the dresser, a train nightlight can keep dark shadows at bay, a rug with railroad tracks can provide a decorative play mat and a train lamp can provide ample lighting to read train stories. Install a floating shelf in the room with a few caves to keep a real toy train circling the room or set up a toy train on a large table or desk if there's room.
