How to Load a Kindle

Only authorized users can email e-books to the Kindle, but anyone can use the USB connection.

The Amazon Kindle has several types of Internet connectivity built into its hardware to allow users to browse the online bookstore, buy e-books and download them directly to the device. Depending on the Kindle model, this can be accomplished using Wi-Fi or the 3G cellular data network. Amazon implemented an email system that allows authorized users to send their own e-books directly to the Kindle, but a USB connection often provides the fastest option for loading new e-books.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the Kindle into your computer using the USB cable that came with the device. The computer will automatically detect the Kindle as a mass-storage device.

    • 2

Open "My Computer" and click the new volume for the Kindle. Open the "Documents" folder.

    • 3

Drag and drop any compatible e-book files from the computer into the Kindle's "Documents" folder.

    • 4

Return to "My Computer," right-click the Kindle volume, and select "Eject." It is now safe to disconnect the Kindle from the USB port. Any e-books you have loaded can now be seen on the Kindle's home page.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Kindle only accepts certain unprotected file formats, so check that your e-books are compatible before using up the device's memory unnecessarily.
