Instructions

    • 1

Use a clean, damp cloth to thoroughly clean the tile or granite prior to sealing. Sealing the surface will lock in any dirt or debris that's present on the surface, so the area must be completely clean prior to sealing. Follow with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth to thoroughly dry the granite or tile.

    • 2

Choose the type of sealer desired for the granite or tile. Different types of sealer include high gloss, matte finish, low gloss and/or penetrating sealer. Sealer can be purchased at various hardware stores or home repair stores. Read labels carefully and choose a sealer that is appropriate for granite or tile and offers the final look you desire.

    • 3

Perform a sealer test on a small piece of granite or tile and allow the test area to dry completely. Test for water resistance, stain resistance and final appearance once the test sample is dry. If you're satisfied with the results, move on to sealing the entire surface area.

    • 4

Use a sponge, clean paintbrush or clean cloth to apply a thin, even layer of sealer over the tile or granite. The surface should darken as it gets wet and then lighten as it dries. Allow the surface to dry completely and then apply another layer of sealer. Wait 24 hours before you place any items on the granite or tile.

    • 5

Clean granite or tile once it's properly sealed by mixing together warm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Apply the soapy solution to the granite or tile with a clean, soft cloth and follow with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.

    • 6

Pour some white vinegar on a clean cloth and use it to wipe away stubborn stains or residue on granite or tile surfaces. Follow by wiping with a clean, damp cloth.
