Semi-permanent Hair Color Instructions

Semi-permanent Hair Color Instructions thumbnail
Get a temporary hair lift from a bold, semi-permanent color.

Semi-permanent hair color is a way to add some spark to your tresses without a long-term color commitment. The process is less harsh than many permanent alternatives and lasts approximately four to six weeks, or 12 washes. If you have dark hair and you want a bolder, brighter color, keep in mind that you will first need to use a lightening agent, like bleach, on your hair. In fact, some semi-permanent hair dye kits come with a lightener. In essence, the lighter the hair, the brighter and more true to life the color will turn out. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shampoo your hair thoroughly to cleanse it of all hair products. You may need to repeat the shampoo for optimal results. Towel dry your hair, leaving it damp.

    • 2

Apply petroleum jelly or another skin-protecting agent to your forehead, ears and neck. This will act as a barrier and prevent skin staining. Wash your hands and put your gloves on.

    • 3

Open the hair dye and pour it into the bowl. Saturate the hair you want dyed, using the color application brush or your fingers.

    • 4

Cover your hair with the plastic cap and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the manufacturer's instructions. The longer you allow it to sit on your hair, the deeper it will penetrate and the richer the color will be. You can also use a hairdryer to help the color penetrate and stick to the hair.

    • 5

Rinse the color out with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. At this time, condition your hair according to your preferences and needs. If your hair usually needs a moisturizer, resume your normal haircare routine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hair dying can be a messy process, so choose an area, like the bathroom or kitchen, where accidents won't cause serious damage. Prevent quick fading with shampoos and conditioners that protect color, and wash your hair only as necessary.

  • If you decide you want a striking color, like flaming red, and you need to lighten your hair, go with the safest route and let a hair colorist do this for you -- unless you are experienced with these chemicals and know how to use them.
