When you need a hiding place for money, jewelery and other valuables, you can choose from a lot of creative "stash" boxes you can make yourself. You can transform an Altoids tin into an inexpensive mini electronic safe that emits a warning should someone else try to go into it. You can use either wood or tin containers and they can be any size you wish as long as they are at least about 3 inches long.

Things You'll Need

  • Musical card
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Altoids tin container or any box with a lid that flips open

Instructions

  1. Choose A Box

    • 1

Remove the mints or other contents from your tin/wooden box.

    • 2

Cut out the small circuit and tiny speaker that are inside the musical card. Cut around both parts carefully and leave a piece of the card about an inch square intact. This piece should be part of the fold in the original card so it folds back and forth but it is still part of the cut out circuit and speaker.

    • 3

Cut between the circuit and the speaker without cutting the wires that run between them to separate the circuit from the speaker. Place the pieces of card with the circuit and speaker and flap into the bottom part of the tin container.

    • 4

Tape the flap of the circuit/speaker piece of card to the inside lid of the tin container. Check to see that when the lid flips open, it activates the music or voice. There should be no sound coming from the container when the lid is closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the Altoids mini safe is ideal for hiding things, but keep it in a secure drawer or someplace where it is not easily accessible so that no one would think about helping themselves to your mints.
