How to Memorize the Order of the Books of the Bible

How to Memorize the Order of the Books of the Bible thumbnail
Memorizing the order of the books of the Bible is a useful skill.

Memorization is a tremendously valuable skill, and applying that to the books of the Bible is particularly valuable for students of Judaism and Christianity. Younger students take to memorization easily, but with time, adult students can also master this long list of books. The easiest way to accomplish this task is to set the list to music, and many versions of tunes are currently in use and available on the Internet. Be careful, however, to use a version that corresponds to the order of the Biblical books that is observed in your denomination.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the list of books in order. You may find it easier to break them into smaller groups, especially on a thematic or historical basis (for example. the Torah, or first Five Books of Moses).

    • 2

Search for appropriate musical versions of the order of the books of the bible on the Internet. YouTube (www.youtube.com) is very popular, but you should plan on spending some time to review the large number of options until you find one that is most appropriate. You may also find links to these songs on the website maintained by your house of worship.

    • 3

Listen to the versions of the musical rendition of these lists to find one that conforms to your denomination.

    • 4

Learn the song with the help of the list you've prepared. Listen to the song and start to sing along. Make notations on your list (arrows up when the music goes up, two parallel horizontal lines when you pause to take a breath).

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to memorize the books that are observed by your denomination. Catholics and Protestants have slightly different Bibles with different books included and several of them are out of sequence. Jews don't use the New Testament at all. You can confirm the list of books observed by your denomination by checking the Bible edition used in your church or synagogue.

  • Visit the website of your church or synagogue to look for links to musical versions of the books of the Bible. If no such link exists, ask your spiritual leader to provide one. Music is the easiest way to remember lists like this, but there are a number of general memory improvement techniques that can also help, such as grouping by association, creating acronyms, adding hand movements.

  • Download songs only if you are completely confident that they are virus-free---it is just as easy to bookmark the videos without downloading.
