How to Remove a Fly Wheel From a 4HP Tecumseh

How to Remove a Fly Wheel From a 4HP Tecumseh thumbnail
Tecumseh engines power many lawn-care implements.

Tecumseh is a small-engine manufacturer that builds a 4HP engine (along with many other sizes) for lawn and garden equipment such as lawn mowers, roto-tillers, log splitters and more. The engines have a cast-iron or aluminum fly wheel that plays an integral part in the timing of the engine. On some older models, the points and condenser are located beneath the fly wheel. In order to service these parts, you'd have to remove the fly wheel from your 4HP Tecumseh engine. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug by pulling on the black rubber boot covering the tip of the spark plug.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the bolts that secure the starter housing to the top of the engine. Set the housing and bolts aside.

    • 3

Insert a fly wheel holder into the fins of the fly wheel. Place a deep socket over the nut on the crankshaft and rotate the nut counterclockwise while holding the fly wheel in place with the fly wheel holder. Remove the nut, washer and starter cup (if one is present).

    • 4

Tighten a fly wheel knockout tool onto the threaded crankshaft by turning it clockwise as far as it will go. Back the knockout tool off one full turn counterclockwise.

    • 5

Hit the end of the knockout tool squarely with a hammer or mallet and the fly wheel should pop loose. Remove the knockout tool and lift the loosened fly wheel off the crankshaft.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent the engine from accidentally firing, always disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug before beginning to work on the engine.
