Mochi, a product of Japan, is a dense rice cake that puffs up when it's toasted. Packaged mochi is readily available at natural or health food markets and at stores that sell Japanese groceries. Rather than toasting the mochi, as traditional, put it in a waffle iron to creates a warm mochi cake with the crunchy texture of a waffle.   • 12.5 ounce block mochi
  • Butcher knife
  • Cooking spray
  • Waffle iron
  • Condiments (optional)

Instructions

  1. Making Mochi

    • 1

      Cut the mochi block into four slices. Chop each slice into four squares to have 16 total pieces.

      Plug in the waffle iron to heat it.

      Lightly coat the waffle iron grates with cooking spray.

      Arrange eight mochi squares on the waffle iron per waffle. Place two squares of mochi into each quadrant of the waffle iron.

      Close the lid as far as it will go and hold it down until the mochi begins to cook and melt.

      Cook the mochi for four minutes or until crispy and lightly browned on the outside.

Tips & Warnings

  • Serve the mochi waffles with condiments complimenting the flavor of mochi initially used. Dust sweet mochi with cinnamon sugar or drizzle it with maple syrup. Spread savory or plain mochi with butter or lay a slice of cheese or deli meat on top.
