Astrology is the idea of using the solar system and a person's birth information to determine personality traits and possibly foresee the future. Several different kinds of astrology exist but the two most common systems in Western society are the Zodiac and Chinese astrology. Both of these types use a person's birth date to determine what their sign is. In both systems 12 signs are available. In Chinese astrology the 12 signs are determined by the birth year, and in the Zodiac by the day of birth.

Instructions

  1. Zodiac

    • 1

Find an astrology chart with the zodiac signs on it. This can be an online resource or from a book.

    • 2

Look for the date range that your birthday falls in. The corresponding sign is your zodiac sign. It will be one of 12 sun signs in the Zodiac -- Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces. Your sun sign is thought to represent your fundamental personality traits.

Enter your birth information into an online moon sign calculator. This is the easiest way to find your moon sign information. Since the moon is on a 28-day cycle, it changes from month-to-month. You will need your birth year and your time of birth as well as the time zone. The calculator will tell you your moon sign. The moon sign is thought to represent your impressionist characteristics like your responses to situations.

Find your birth year in a Chinese astrology chart to find your corresponding animal.

    • 5

Calculate your Chinese sign using your birth year and the following information if you are unable to find a Chinese astrology chart. The year of the rat was in 1984, the following animals represented each year after: ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The pig was the animal for 1995 ending the 12-year cycle. Find which year is 12 years from your birth year and the corresponding sign will be your sign.

Use the last number of your birth year to find out the corresponding element that is used with your Chinese sign. The Chinese use five elements in two-year rotations (to equal 10-year cycles) for the five elements. Years ending in zero or one are metal, two or three are water, four and five are wood, six or seven are fire, and eight or nine are earth.
