How to Find What Switch Port a Server Is Connected To

A switch is a device on a network that handles all traffic and designates where data is supposed to go. This is accomplished by the switch "looking into" the data packet and reading who is supposed to get that packet. Without this device the Internet would not work. Switch ports have visual indicators on each port to give details about the connection, the speed and whether a connection is present. The switch port is directly attached to each computer's Ethernet card on workstations and servers.

Instructions

    • 1

Count the lights lit on the switch and make note of the numbers of each lit port. Since each active port is lit, when the light goes out, it will be easy to determine which switch port is connected to the server.

    • 2

Unplug the Ethernet wire on the back of the server. Go to the switch and, using your chart, verify which light went out. The light that went out is the port connected to your Server.

Verify the correct port was found, then cross off the port that was ruled out. Go back to the server and plug the Ethernet wire back in. Go back to the switch and look for the number of the switch port that was just off, and verify it is now on. This is the easiest and quickest way to determine the port in question.
