How to Address a Duke

When addressing someone of title or nobility it's important that you know the proper forms of speaking or writing. When addressing a duke or duchess it's especially important that you know not only their rank, but if they have any other titles or dignitaries that you should apply to the title when speaking or writing to them.

Instructions

    • 1

Put all ecclesiastical, ambassadorial or armed forces ranks in front of the rank of duke whenever you address the duke. Major General Duke for instance would be the appropriate form of address.

    • 2

Refer to the duke as "the Duke," if there aren't any other dukes that the one you're addressing could be mistaken for. If there are other dukes, refer to the person as "the Duke of..." and put in the name of the place the duke is named in such as York, Westchester, etc.

    • 3

Address a letter to the duke with the full honorific when writing a legal or formal letter. If the letter is more informal then you can address it as "dear Duke."
