How to Apply for the Tennessee Lottery Scholarship
Tennessee Lottery-funded awards and programs currently benefit more than 100,000 students annually, according to the Tennessee Lottery website. Funds first became available in 2004 for those enrolled in both private and public college and universities state-wide. The Tennessee Education Lottery Corp. deposits funds into a state education account, while the Tennessee Student Assistance Corp. administers all grants and scholarships from this account through college financial aid offices.

Meet eligibility requirements, one of which is being a resident of Tennessee for at least one year as of Sept. 1 of the application year for fall entrants and as of Feb. 1 of the application year for spring and summer entrants. Other eligibility criteria include being a dependent child of Department of Defense employees, active-duty members of the Tennessee National Guard or members of the U.S. military if Tennessee was the Home of Record listed upon military service entry or being a full-time religious worker whoremains a resident of Tennessee while serving out of the state.

Enroll in one of the institutions approved to receive lottery funds within 16 months of high school completion or its equivalency. Almost every accredited public and private college and university in the state is listed as eligible to receive funds from the Tennessee Lottery. Basic admissions criteria must be met in order to receive financial aid awards at the school. Standard requirements for enrollment include a high school diploma or equivalent, competency testing and a completed application.

Complete institutional and federal applications for student financial aid. While each school may require an additional application, the standard way to apply for any college aid is to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application can be completed on the Internet or by paper through the mail. Paper copies can be obtained at high schools counselors or college financial-aid offices. Completion of the FAFSA will require personal information regarding enrollment plans and overall financial situation. The school will send an award letter listing the scholarship.
