Choosing the best car stereo head unit or deck to match your needs is an important task. There are many variables to consider such as power, flexibility, features and cost. Write down a list of criteria that that are must-haves and nice-to-haves. There are many factors to consider. Will the unit need MP3 CD support? Does the unit need to have AUX input for an MP3 player? Does the head unit need to have blue tooth phone integration? Will an external amplifier be powering the interior speakers? If so, then power is not as important. Will sub-woofers be connected to this unit, thereby requiring sub out cables from the unit? Does the user need a remote control? Does the user need a flip up screen to play movies or video games? Does the unit have a built in CD changer or support an external one? Does the unit support satellite radio, does it need to? Does the unit come with pre-amp output?

Most importantly, set a baseline budget before visiting a store. This should be in a range of roughly what the user is willing to spend, for example $200-$400.
