How to Make a Harem Veil
Belly dancing is not just beautiful to watch or do, it is great exercise for all the muscles in your body. Making your own costume is a great way to use your creativity. You can be elaborate with bells and sequins, make harem pants of sheer fabric and a bra top with jangling coins. No belly dancing costume would be complete without at least one veil. Making a veil does not require a great deal of sewing expertise.

1
Fold 3 yards of 54-inch wide paper in half so you end up with a 54-inch square of folded paper. Tie a string around the pen and cut the string down to 54 inches long with scissors.
-
2
Place the paper with the folded edge running vertically along the left side. Hold the end of the string in the upper left corner. Draw a line with the pen from the upper right to the lower left corner to make an arc.

3
Cut along the curved line with scissors and unfold the paper so the straight edge is along the top of the paper. Place the paper on top of the fabric so the straight edge of the fabric lines up with the straight edge of the paper pattern.
-
4
Cut out the fabric under the patter along the pattern shape. Remove any parts of the pattern that extend over the edges of the fabric with the scissors.
-
5
Set the extra pattern pieces on top of the fabric. Cut out those pieces. Sew all of the veil pieces together into a semicircle shape using the sewing machine.
-
6
Sew a straight stitch along the curved edge of the veil ¼ inch from the edge. Turn the hem up at the stitch line; fold the fabric up again to conceal the raw edges.
-
7
Sew the folded curved hem down. Do the same to the straight edge. Apply trim along the right side of the fabric along the edge with the sewing machine.

Tips & Warnings
The type of fabric you use dictates the movement you will get from the veil so practice with different types before making yours.
Never cut material without ironing it first or the cuts will not be true.
