Fix an LCD TV Screen.

There are many LCD TV (liquid crystal display television) brands, and all are known to have flaws. Some brands are better than others, because they are made with longer lasting components. The life span of an LCD depends on the quality of the interior lighting components. Life expectancy of televisions used to be around 10 years, but depending on daily usage and monitor settings they can last up to 50 years. There are common problems that arise with LCD TV screens. Some can be fixed with simple troubleshooting, while others may require the aid of a professional.

Instructions

Check all cable connections to solve black screen issues--where the LCD screen will only display black while it is playing. Disable all the cables and reconnect them if necessary. Check the setup of the screen saver if it is included with the TV. Check the TV's owners manual for screen saver troubleshooting because all screen saver setups are different. If none of these solutions solve the problem, then the last resort is to call the manufacturer's customer service and get repair or a replacement component. The lamp, rear projection component or the LCD panel might be damaged.

Locate the sleep timer function on the TV menu under "Setup" if the LCD keeps turning off. The sleep timer might be turned on to a certain number of minutes that keeps turning the LCD off. Determine if the power supply is adequate by checking the power breaker. If the TV requires more power then the outlet can supply, it will trip the breaker. Also, check that there are no loose wires. The TV may need to be moved to a stronger power source or the LCD panel may need to be replaced. If the power source change has no effect, call the manufacturer.

Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to scratches on the LCD that are interfering with the picture. This can even out the scratch with the rest of the LCD screen and make the scratch disappear. Scratches can be caused by something hitting or falling on the screen.

You can fix an LCD displaying "half picture" with a soldering iron. Half picture is when only half the screen is displaying actual TV picture and the rest of the screen is either black or snowy. A cold solder joint in the inductor or small component can cause half picture and using a soldering iron on the cold joints can repair the problem. Whoever is attempting this fix must be experienced with electrical components, and if not, find an electronics repair tech.

Buy a back light replacement if the LCD is producing dim picture quality or losing resolution, and have a professional install it.

    • 6

Replacement of the screen itself might be necessary if the LCD screen is displaying streaks through the picture. This will require the manufacturer to repair the issue. This might have been caused by a fracture in one of the screen substrates, which is the base layer of glass of the LCD screen. An object hitting the screen and releasing bubbles from the liquid crystals might have also caused it.

Tips & Warnings

  • In the event that the LCD TV needs to be sent for repair it is ideal to check the status of the warranty before it is sent to the manufacturer.
