Sea sponges are marine life specimens commonly used for home decoration or body care. You can purchase them from most body care shops, or you can harvest your own. You need to thoroughly clean and preserve sea sponges that you harvest yourself so they do not become smelly.

Step 1

Put on protective gloves. Hold the sea sponge under running water in the sink or outside under a garden spigot. Rinse the sponge out until the water runs clear.

Step 2

Squeeze the sea sponge gently with both hands to remove the excess water.

Step 3

Fill a soup pot large enough to hold the sea sponge with rubbing alcohol. Submerge the sea sponge in the rubbing alcohol and put the lid on the soup pot. Keep the pot in a cool place for 48 hours.

Step 4

Remove the sea sponge from the alcohol and gently squeeze it to remove the excess. Place the sea sponge on a towel in full sunlight until it is completely dry. This may take up to eight hours, so it is best to put it in the sunlight in the morning so it gets a full day's drying time.
